I’ve become quite fascinated lately with the incredible power of the internet to help improve oneself. It’s almost as though education has become open source.
Yale university recently unveiled what it calls “Open Yale”. Offering online courses in subjects English, Philosophy and others like Physics you can download the MP3’s or videos of the lectures. What makes this so powerful is that in the age of the iPod you can simply load it up with the audio or video files and learn the work in your spare time. Each course even offers a final exam for you to work on. Hopefully this idea will become incredibly popular and not only will Yale offer more courses online but so will other esteemed universities.
My second site of interest is Mango Languages. Mango provides language lessons English speakers to learn other diverse languages such as Japanese, Greek, Spanish and many others. Each language has many, many lessons which are set out simplistically. Each language is taught incrementally and the ability to go back to previous lessons easily is invaluable. Audio files of the lessons are available to buy and look like an excellent purchase if you’re looking to learn a new language.
It amazes me that you could potentially find a way to learn any new skill with a simple Google search. One can never have enough information in their heads and improving on oneself is a wonderful thing. I cannot begin to think how much new information I’ve gathered from daily Wikipedia searches simply because I have an overly inquisitive mind.
What other sites that teach skills or concepts can you recommend? Leave a comment and share the link love. In the mean time, I’m off to learn Greek.
