In Helen Zille’s (Democratic Alliance and thus the opposition leader) latest email newsletter she absolutely lambasted president Thabo Mbeki’s state of the nation speech. What she said made a lot of sense, she complained how Mbeki has not addressed the energy crisis and has ignored the ineffectiveness of ministers who, through their incompetence, created the crisis. She also states with regards to the Mbeki speech: “As has become his custom, he has failed to confront the realities facing our country head-on.”
Zille then goes on to talk about how the DA wants to call for the dissolution of the National Assembly which will result in a fresh round of elections. The obvious hope for this is that the Democratic Alliance will gain ground and the public will revolt against the ruling ANC government.
I’m actually hitting my head against my desk with the thought that this is the best our opposition can do. Frankly I think Helen Zille is a fantastic leader; strong but approachable but this idea is sheer madness! I don’t know if anyone mentioned this to Zille but the new leader of the ANC is Jacob Zuma; a rapist, fraudster and grade 5 graduate. For some reason Zuma is the best leader the ANC has and if new elections do occur there is little to no doubt in my mind that Zuma will come to power. Sure, there might be some inroads made by the DA to the ANC majority but never enough to ensure that Zille will become president.
Frankly all Zille is achieving is that Zuma becomes president before the scheduled 2009 elections. I really hope that this is just conjecture and will not actually occur. Well done to Zille for blasting Mbeki but in typical opposition fashion she does not offer solutions or alternatives.
The Democratic Alliance will never be anything more than the white liberal party unless they can offer a decent solution to problems. No one wants to hear that the ANC are a bunch of uneducated mongoloids: we all know that. What they public wants to know is what the opposition can do to make the situation better.
