I actually wanted to use a different saying for the heading of this post but since I have young, impressionable siblings reading my blog I have to censor certain things. Use your imagination with regards to easy woman and going down….
Anyway so as you may or may not have noticed, national radio station 5FM has been on a downward spiral for quite a while now. This is basically due to their need to change their music to fit all different racial demographics in the country. No other radio stations do that and frankly it’s a bit difficult to please everyone. As a result of their desire to please the masses they cannot really decide on whom to please the most. Their programming has been vague and uncertain in terms of music genre. Fortunately for the station they have some pretty decent, high profile, DJ’s to make the situation bearable.
This is all about to change…
Clearly sensing a swing in quality Nicole Fox, Ian F and Kevin Fine are leaving the building. As a result, hiring and reshuffling has to take place. The new line up is as such:
6:00 – 9:00 : Gareth Cliff
9:00 – 12:00 : Sasha Marteningo
12:00 – 15:00 : Grant & Anele
15:00 – 19:00 : DJ Fresh
19:00 – 22:00 : Koula
22:00 – 01:00 : Sureshnie Rider
Okay so let’s start from the top! Gareth Cliff is humorous even if he isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. I’m not going to get into a debate on him but I like him. Next up is the Sasha Marteningo show. Sasha is quite enjoyable to listen to but only because he used to host his show with Ian F and their banter was entertaining to listen to. On his own he’s a bit forgettable unfortunately. I mean I like the guy, but he’s just okay by himself.
I’ve started a new paragraph for Grant & Anele as they deserve to be ripped to shreds all by themselves. Basically these two mongoloids came from rival, local to Gauteng, station Highveld Stereo. They are by far and away the most ignorant, idiotic and annoying human beings on the radio. Their regular segments on Highveld included such gems as “Sing along Thursday” and my person favourite: “Status Update” where they read what sounded like peoples Facebook status updates. With wit and originality like that what can we expect? Anele also just really bugs me greatly. She sounds as though she has a massive chip on her shoulder and just lacks any quality comments. Their voices are annoying let alone their personalities. I’m really disappointed that they could employ people like this. I couldn’t help but laugh when they come on stage at the Coke Fest yesterday and were greeted with boo’s and copious amounts of swearing.
DJ Fresh is awesome and so is Koula. I don’t like Sureshnie but that’s just a personal taste issue, she is, as they would say, pleasant. Elana Africa moves to the Saturday and Sunday breakfast slot that seems a lot like a demotion to me considering she’s quite popular.
So there we have it, the new 5FM line up. Am I cynical? Without doubt. Am I right about 5FM about to be even worse than it was before? Without Doubt.

5FM has been down in the dumps for a good couple of years and lets see – it has been 6 to 7 years now that I’ve stopped listening to them?
It is since Anthony Duke (station manager) left the station and was replaced by some idiot who decided to change the station demographic and fired all the good DJ’s.
Radio in SA has been on a downward spiral for many years now and 5FM is no different.
Radio in SA is utter hell, listening to it makes me want to smash my car into the nearest target.
Five FM and its collection of 3rd rate ass-clowns is probably one of the worst offenders. Certainly the one that is most effective at perpetuating the dumbed down standard of bull crap.
Until we have a means for people to be exposed to a wider gamut of music in this country, things will probably only get worse. Don’t think dogs, think 3 legged ferrets, devolving into mutant skunks etc.
Hey all, thanks for popping past. I don’t know about you guys but my solution to the 5FM problem has been to listen to Radio 2000, especially Michelle Constants show called The Lucky Packet from twelve till (I think) three.
She plays a great selection of music, wish all radio could be like her show.

True, the music sucks but the other stations are just as crap – if not worse. Highveld plays the same song a hundred times&has the WORST DJs I’ve ever heard. If 5fm has resorted to those morons… then it really has gone to the dogs.

Would love to agree with you lilj25 with regards to giving them a chance. Unfortunately I listened to Grant & Anele plenty on their old radio station and after giving them a chance, they still sucked.
I was at the Klein Karoo Arts Festival last week when an ad came over 5FM. It sounded like the station was closing down.
Any thoughts on this? They said “It’s been a great 12 years” or something like that.
I think it had to do with Ian F leaving.

I know that I shouldn’t waste my time on sites like these – I mean we have bigger issues to worry about such as the Zimbabwean vote recount. But nevertheless, I have been listening to 5FM for years, back when they were called Radio 5, and unfortunately not a lot of people accept change very well. Gareth is cool, I don’t always agree with everything he says. I think the best 5FM DJ has to be DJ Fresh – his music is cool, and he seems to appeal to the mass market. As for Grant & Anele – they irritate me too. Anele annoyed me big time the other day when she was so ‘shocked’ that people don’t wash their own underwear and let the domestic worker do this as part of a bigger washing load! I mean what f**** planet is she from??? She probably has accidents. I know terrible for saying that, but it had to be said. It is all about change and people should just accept it or listen to their CD’s instead. Thank gawd for cd players & ipods

I agree with the last comment. Its all about change. I started listening to 5fm back in 2003. Gareth Cliff was on. I liked him and i liked the diverse playlist of the station. The point that im trying to make is. Nothing stays the same forever. Yes 5fm has lost its old listeners with its new playlist but has attracted new listeners like myself. As for Grant and Anele, didnt listen to their show on Highveld but so far they sound good to me. I like their old school new school segment of their show.

I agree totally with the comments about 5fm starting to become a shitty radio station. Some DJ’s are annoying, I agree, but the music- if you can call it musiek- that they play is just the same crap top 10 hit list, Mariah’s touch my body, Madonna’s 4 minutes, Seal’s best life,(and those are just the ones I know the names to…) over and over and over! What happened to playing some other music, Depeche Mode, The Killers, INXS, James, Crowded House, Smashing pumpkins…..
I agree that 5fm has gone downhill but I would much rather listen to 5 than some of the other garbage stations out there such as Algoa or East Coast. Radio Algoa grates my nerves with its cheezy ballads and love songs from god only knows what decade, and the playlist never seems to change, same crap over and over. As if that isn’t enough we have to listen to some of the most irritating DJ’s alive and the same competition promos played every 5 minutes for the entire day (apparently they think we have the memory of a 3 legged ferret as well).
Who are these people?! I’m just relieved I’m not subjected to it at work anymore, my productivity was starting to take a knock

i have to agree with you slightly 5 isnt what it used to be, there r a lot of tracks overplayed all day but otherthan that they r still ahead of some other rubbish you can hear on radio these days

Do you think Google posted this because of sour grapes or just ’cause they never made it into radio? I now listen to 702, much less profanity and no sarcastic DJ’s when you complain about it. Gareth, being outspoken is good, being rude just reflects badly on your parents.
I’m currently living overseas for a year due to work commitments, I’m so home sick that I tune in to 5fm over streaming audio, but frankly as much as I Love my country, I find myself unable to listen to most of the DJ’s except Sasha.. I’ve been a 5fm fan since 1990 and its OVERR…..they have to stop trying to please everyone ….find a target audience and stick to it!!! I can’t handle it I would rather listen to local Spanish radio stations than the crap 5fm play on air.
And by the way ever since I opened the 5fm website when the Google warning came up my comp went to @%$#^%^#$. Straight after the comp froze and everything has gone haywire!!

Well, no-one seems to have mentioned Mark Gillman, who is one of the crudest, intellectually challenged and downright obnoxious people on the planet. I really feel for Elana Afrika, who has to keep the Saturday morning show running while he is off on his endless, illogical, pointless and egotistical rantings. His voice (screech)grates on the ear and he says nothing of value, not to mention his insulting comments and filthy verbage.
He interrupts everyone and is unable to take any teasing or correction. However,he certainly likes to dish out insults and personal remarks. He should realise that he is never going to be Fresh or Gareth. He doesn’t have the intellect or the charm, never mind any professionalism. He should become a skunk farmer so that he can wallow in the same stink he enjoys.
I think 5FM is alright most of you are being to Hard on them they have just recreated and they have tried to introduce a new synergy and getting Fresh was a real Good Move he Holds the Station down ,they Just need to scout for new Talent and there is plenty of Room for Improvement .

It’s not that we are afraid of change but change is meant to happen to allow something new and better to take the place of the old and stale. Well quite frankly I was happy with the old and stale and if Grant and Anele are indicative of what’s “better” then could somebody please place the business end of a nailgun against my eye and pull the trigger? Anele makes me want to stick razorblades under my fingernails, how did someone so incredibly STUPID get onto radio? Which braindead, deaf and dumb exec did she boink to get the job? 5fm has lost the plot completely when it comes to their target market, no one there seems to know who they are catering to. I’m an actress (well I’m trying to be anyway!) and I can’t believe the standard of entertainment in our country, I know we have talented, entertaining people here, why are they not the ones we see on our tv’s and hear on our radios? Howard Stern, now there’s a DJ that South Afirca would not be able to live upto. I like Sash, but he needs his side kick back! DJ Fresh, great, side kicks need to be replaced though. I download Howard on a daily basis, anyone that can entertain for 6 hours a day, needs to be brilliant, and speak of sidekicks, his got the best. just wish Anele would grow up and get a life and live in the now instead of that damn chip on her shoulder!! Hell when Darren scott starts to beat 5fm hands down, then there’s a huge problem……..
The station is doing incredibly well now but the only problem is that it lacks some rock still, as a rock fan, there is near not enough, at least there are alternative/indie rock mixes and some of this and some of that. I miss the trance and hard rock. I’m so bored of the mainstream hip hop hitting the charts but the mixes are way more exciting at least.
I do agree on most of your comments. DJ Fresh is awesome, but someone needs to really get rid that “Poppie” chick, She is totally annoying. Thinks she is the hippest, coolest thing on radio but is totally opposite.
