The Mazda 2 – Car of the year

I’ve thought the Mazda 2 was a great car from the moment it came out about 6-8 months ago and I must say, I’m clearly not the only one.

Firstly Car Magazine crowned it the best buy in its segment and this week its won even bigger accolades. In South Africa the car managed to beat some pretty stiff competition to become the SA car of the year. To drop a couple of names these competitors included the Toyota Corolla (which must be the most common car on South African roads) as well as the Honda CRV diesel (the Honda 2.2 liter engine is absolutely phenomenal) and bigger cars such as the Lexus LS460. It even beat the new Mercedes Benz C-Class, which in my opinion is one of the most exiting cars to come out of the Mercedes stable in a long time.

To top off this achievement the car then won the world car of the year! In the world car section it beat powerful competitors such as the Audi R8 (which won performance car of the year) and again the new Mercedes C-Class (which came in third).

Taking a look at the car we have a 1.5 engine with all the bells and whistles. It features cool gimicks such as keyless entry; rain sensing windscreen wipers and auto headlights. The little 1.5 engine produces 75Kw and since the car is just over a ton, it’s a lot of fun to drive offering sporty performance. Compared to competitors such as the VW Polo or the Ford Fiesta this car is miles ahead of its segment rivals.

All in all a deserved victory. Well done to Mazda, one of my favourite car companies, for a great win.
