I’m a little late on the uptake here but recently shots of the new Golf 6 were released onto the Internet.
Below is a picture of the car from the front:
As you can see they took styling cues from the front of the new Scirocco (which you can view here) and plonked it onto the current Golf 5 platform. Frankly this car looks a lot like the Golf 5 except we live in a parallel universe where the Golf pigged out on excessive amounts of chocolate and got a little bit wider….
The Golf 5 was only released in 2004 so it comes as a surprise that the sixth generation of the car is already being launched. The reason for this launch is due to the fact that production of the fifth generation was very costly and this cut into the profit margin back at VW headquarters. The sixth generation is supposedly more efficient to build and therefore cheaper. I mean it makes sense in the current economic climate except for one tiiiiny issue: the fact that the base model costs 200 Euros more than it did with the fifth generation model. So basically VW is making more money and not translating those savings to the customer. The simple fact is even the interior is the same as the Golf 5, there is nothing revolutionary here.
Frankly though, I find the new design so bland and dowdy looking that I’m dubbing this the Golf 5.5. It’s more of a model refresh than an entirely new range. They fattened up the Golf to appeal to slightly tubbier middle class buyers who have been driving some form of the Golf since their twenties. VW is bound to launch GTI, convertible and countless Diesel versions of this car but I can’t help but not get excited.
If consistency to the point of boredom appeals to you then the Golf is going to be a winner but if you like a little bit of difference in your morning commute then look elsewhere.

I absolutely love the new Golf 6.But true to the Golf they will be far to many every where you look and wont be for that individual.
Totally agree with you Lilly. The Golf is a bit bland for my tastes but it’s certainly a solid option for someone wanting a car that will last them years hassle free.
VW’s success is in quality products which they consistently do.

VW do make panoramic sunroofs, they dont do it in SA as lots of other features thats missing. Here in Europe we have it, as well as 3 door golfs, something I havent seen in SA since the golf 1. It depends on the market, here in europe we dont have citi golfs as it is still regarded as a golf 1. Its because of the economy, what people can afford. Why would people buy a golf 6 with a panoramic sunroof if the cost would be the same as an Audi A3. Lots of products are being compromised in SA becuase of cost, what people can afford, and what kind of profits companies can make on it. This is not only in true in the auto industry but in many other fields of manufacturing. etc, Example is the cost of broadband internet access in SA, the most expensive in the world, with the worst service and reliability. In Japan you can get a 1GB fibre optic line for home use with no cap for £40 per month.

I drive Golf 5, there will be nothing different from Golf 5.5 as it is suggested. If it comes with a new spike wheel, I will only buy that and look the same as Golf 5.5 drivers!

Still find my current RED Golf V GTI lovely. Sorry for me Golf 6 does’nt excite me, maybe it’s one of those cars that will grow on you with time. I guess time will tell. For now Golf V GTI rocks!!!!!!!!!!!

hmmm…. nice car. its basically a golf 5, with a facelift. and a few little extras. they have made it more cost efficient(for them) but more expensive for the customer.
they have just redesigned the golf 5. apparently with less noise inside the car, etc… but id rather go for the G5. it looks much better… i think the REAL golf 6 is the oettinger. now THATS a beautiful car.

i love this car.
Golf 6 is not interesting at all, though I never felt something for Golf 5 now I even prefer Golf 5 than Golf 6.Golf 5 did not move my heart, Golf 6 is worse. Scirocco moved my heart in every way, ever since I have been waiting for a WOW car from VW after Golf 4 , Scirocco came to my rescure when I was about to give up on VW. VW I am here to stay, I am going no where from my Golf 4 to Scirocco, what a move? I have no regrets because Scirocco completes my style it’s a beautiful car!
I am not really impressed with the Golf6, in fact, I am disappointed, there is no expected WOW FACTOR at all! well I think a Scirocco wowed me.

Guys lets not fool ourselves…WE all see that , VW just needed to release something but no much work was done, I am not too much of VW fan but I was waiting fot it since I am intending to change my wheels,but nheee..nooooo. If I were to choose between 6 and 5 i WILL GO TO 5 GTI without thinking twice. Guys recruit new designers with fresh ideas cause now your designers are just revising the previous designs.
